Moving to Hawai’i ?

Moving is always a big decision and moving to Hawai’i is like moving to another country. Since you are planning to move to Hawai’i, you probably may have many questions and doubts wandering through your mind. Since we live in Hawai’i and we know this place well, so we’d like to put your mind at ease with some important information and tips for moving to Hawaii.

Moving Your Personal Belongings to Hawaii

One of the biggest challenges when relocating to or from Hawai’i is transporting your car, furniture, other large household items and pets safely.

(Automobile Shipment) Car: If you’re brining a car when you move to Hawaii, Companies such as West Point Relocation and Matson Navigation can provide the shipping services at good prices, from most locations on U.S. A standard vehicle will normally cost about $1,050 (Some of the shipping companies even allow you to send the car fully packed) but anyhow check with them in advance to verify current prices and conditions. Shipping a car or household items and furniture container generally takes 3 to 4 weeks.

Please note: Shipping rates and conditions may change. In order to obtain the latest information on how you can ship a vehicle from the mainland, visit Matson Navigation’s website at http://www.matson.com/ and West Point Relocation website http://www.westpointrelocation.com/.

Sell or ship? Some people decide it’s more economical to sell certain items than it is to ship them — such as older car. That is often a wise choice.

Furniture and Household items:  If your household items are in good condition, it makes sense to take them with you to Hawai’i. In Hawai’i you’ll find higher costs for manufactured goods. But keep in mind that many places in Hawai’i are fully furnished I mean you don’t need to bring everything, you’ll easily find houses/apartments with bedroom furniture sets, sofa sets, dining sets including cookware and so on.

It is recommended to pack light and bring only what you really need and your personal things like documents, prescriptions, clothes.  You’ll need casual wear, such as T-shirts, shorts, skirts, jeans and light jackets. You can find affordable clothing shops in Hawai’i if you need more clothes.

Groceries: Groceries are expensive here. Most things have to be shipped here, so everything costs more. Especially, our Indian grocery too expensive as there is only one shop in Hawai’i.

You can also find some of our Indian grocery in Down to Earth and Star Market, good idea for staying in your budget is to buy what’s on sale in these two shops, they have the best sale prices. Other items, like detergent, paper towels, toilet paper, cleaning products, etc. in bulk much more cheap at Costco & Sam’s Club.

It is a good idea to bring some indian groceries while coming from mainland for at least 4 to 6 months to get on and offcourse, not to get shocked with the prices. However, after a few months you’ll get used to the hawaii cost of living :).

Pets: If you have pets, there is a mandatory quarantine for pets moving to Hawaii. It is time-consuming and expensive. So, first thing you want to do is to contact Animal Guarantee Section at least 5 months prior to moving to Hawai’i. Check out the following link for more details http://www.hawaiiag.org/hdoa.

Plants: Hawai’i has plant quarantine restrictions. For more information please contact Department of Agriculture Hawaii website http://hawaii.gov/hdoa/Info/doa_importing.
